Why Polymer Clay?

You may ask, why, out of all the mediums available, I have chosen polymer clay. Or, even more bluntly, "what is polymer clay anyway!?!"

Polymer clay is a mix of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), plasticizer, and pigment. So basically - - it's plastic! Now you are probably thinking, by why plastic?

Several reasons, actually...

1. Durability - in addition to it NOT being able to be shattered by the accidental drop on the floor, this material has a great amount of flexibility. With the hair slides, this is especially important! In order for it to hold, it needs to be somewhat stretched and then spring back to a tighter position. Keep in mind...this is durable...but not indestructible...so still use care. :)

2. Ease of use - that's right! You can play with this clay right at your coffee table if choose. I recommend a nicely set up work space; but hey, your world, your choice.

3. Low Curing Temp - Because it cures at such a low temperature, you can bake this right in your conventional oven! Have you looked at the price of a kiln?!? Let's just say...it's pricey! Not to mention at firing temperatures ranging up to 2552 degrees F, it would cook your house! Can you say, "winter use only?!"

4. Versatility - There is so much you can make with this, the possibilities are endless! Once you start using it, I guarantee, you will continue to see more and more uses. Get ready for your mind to begin churning ideas. The living room light switch cover needs to be replaced? "Oooh...I'll bet I could make a new one out of polymer clay." The new ceiling fan has a ho-hum pull - polymer clay! Your two year old breaks one of your ceramic coasters? No problem you can make a new set however you like...and bonus, she can jump on them and throw them across the room (not that you'd let her, but let's be honest, it happens!)

5. Fun - Explanation not required! It's the adult version of play dough! :)
